Technical School Wish List

The technical school serves nearly 500 youth and adults annually living in some of the poorest parts of Quito.  Prior to entering the technical school, boys typically are working on the street shining shoes or selling candy, mothers work as domestics and fathers work as day laborers. All members of the family receive technical training.

The technical education program provides training in the areas of: auto-mechanics, industrial mechanics, carpentry, cosmetology, industrial sewing, plumbing, baking and sales and marketing skills.

This is a dual apprentice system of "classroom-shop" training. Students are helped by a vocational orientation office which helps them with periodic visits to their work places and ongoing contact with business and shops that might offer jobs. This office also helps to place graduates in good paying jobs.

The technical program provides graduates with valuable technical and in-demand work skills and aids them in securing higher paying jobs through technical training. 95% of graduates are employed and 72% continue to work in the trade they learned at the WBC.
